Choosing a patio umbrella or shade
- Cantilever or centre pole: a cantilever umbrella leaves the space under the canopy free for a table or sectional; a centre-pole umbrella fits through a patio table hole.
- Size: the canopy should extend about 2 ft (60 cm) past the table on each side to shade seated guests.
- Base: the larger or more offset the umbrella, the heavier the base needs to be; add weight bags if needed.
- Balcony: a half-round umbrella sits flat against the wall and takes up only half the space.
Frequently asked questions
Should I close a patio umbrella when it's windy?
Yes. Close and tie the umbrella as soon as the wind picks up, and every evening; even well weighted, an open umbrella can tip in a gust.
Can a shade sail replace an umbrella?
It covers a larger area with no pole on the ground, but must be tensioned between solid anchor points such as a wall, post or tree. An umbrella is easier to move around.
