Choosing air conditioning or a dehumidifier

  • Match the problem: an air conditioner lowers the temperature, a dehumidifier pulls moisture out and a fan moves air. A damp basement needs a dehumidifier first.
  • Capacity: dehumidifier capacity is given in litres removed per day. Large rooms and very damp basements call for a higher-capacity unit.
  • Drainage: a continuous drain hose saves you emptying the tank by hand, ideal when the unit sits near a floor drain.
  • Controls: a timer, LED or LCD display and adjustable humidistat let the unit run on its own.

Frequently asked questions

Should a dehumidifier run in winter?

It is mostly needed from spring to fall, when the air is humid. In winter, heated indoor air is often dry, and an adjustable humidistat shuts the unit off on its own once your chosen level is reached.

Can a dehumidifier replace an air conditioner?

No. It makes the air drier and more comfortable, but it does not cool the room and actually gives off a little heat. To bring the temperature down, you need an air conditioner.
