Choosing an electric fireplace
- Installation type: a wall-mounted or recessed unit frees up floor space but needs an opening of the right size; a freestanding or mantel model goes anywhere with no renovation.
- Two pieces in one: a fireplace TV stand combines storage, shelves and warmth under the screen.
- Output: many models offer two settings, 750 W and 1500 W, and some include a thermostat to hold the temperature.
- Safety: plug the unit straight into a wall outlet and keep curtains and furniture clear of the warm-air outlet.
Frequently asked questions
Does an electric fireplace use a lot of electricity?
It depends on the setting: at 1500 W it uses 1.5 kWh per hour of heating, and half that at 750 W. On models with a thermostat, the heat cycles off once the room reaches the set temperature, which cuts consumption.
Can I plug a space heater into an extension cord?
It is not recommended. Extension cords and power bars can overheat under a heater's load, so follow the manual's instructions.
